The journals of Matteo Ricci illustrated how ignorant and uninformed the Chinese were in the late Ming Dynasty. Well, it seems that time has not exactly make the Chinese more aware of what is happening in the world. I was reminded of the days I spent travelling around in China with my American friend who is black. Everywhere we went people were staring at us and many even snapped pictures of my poor friend. What made her sad was not the unnecessary attention she received, but the weird glares from the people made her feel as if she was a monster or alien. One of the incidents happened was really appalling. A middle-aged woman approached me in the supermarket and asked me why is my friend so black, and commented that she looked dirty. This is downright absurd and freaking rude of her, but all I could say was, she is a black American. BUT SO?
My friend asked what happened, I simply said that the woman compliment her hair. (Her hair drew a lot of attention because it was plaited. -.-)
But I guess, the saddest thing is that, many do not even know that they are ignorant just because they are.
